School Based Flu Clinics Being Offered by Phelps/Maries An Open Letter to Students and Parents It’s that time of the year again. Everyone is getting their supplies, packing their back-packs, and heading back to school. This also means that it is flu season again, and it is important to know what you can do to protect yourself and your child. Last year, the Phelps/Maries County Health Department gave flu vaccinations at local schools to a great turn out. These flu vaccinations were given as a nasal spray, or for children with asthma as a shot. We gave over 5000 vaccinations in the form of a nasal spray, with no children getting sick. The Phelps/Maries County Health Department will be giving flu vaccinations again at your local schools this year. The dates and times of these vaccinations will be given at a later date, so be watching for more information from your school nurse. The flu vaccinations are a little different this year. The new vaccine includes both the seasonal flu and the H1N1, so children over nine only need one dose this year. If you have a child under nine years old who received at least one H1N1 shot last year, they also need only one dose. If you have a child under nine who did not receive a dose of the H1N1 vaccine least year, they will have to get a booster to ensure they are protected against the flu. Preference for the nasal spray will be given to children that have no health problems that will prevent them from receiving it. The actual shot will be given to children with asthma, or on the request of the parents/guardians. For any questions, or for more information, please contact the Phelps/Maries County Health Department at 573-458-6010 or toll free 1-800-301-4942. More information will also be on www.phelpscountyhealth.com. Download Related Documents:
